FAQ's/Important Dates
What is Reading Counts?
Reading Counts is a reading incentive program that is produced by Scholastic, Inc. BES PTA sponsors the program for our 2nd-6th graders who choose to participate.
How does Reading Counts work?
BES students will be taking the Scholastic Reading Inventory (SRI) during the month of September to test their current reading level and give them a guide to choose appropriate books on their reading level. Once Reading Counts Kicks off, students who choose to participate will be able to earn rewards and incentives on a monthly basis. The more students read, the more they can earn!
Points are accumulated when a student passes comprehension quizzes that are generated by a Scholastic computer program. The amount of time that students have to take quizzes will be determined by the classroom teacher. Students may also take quizzes on the computers in the library. The PTA Reading Counts committee will keep track of all points earned each month and will reward students at the beginning of the following month.
If BES does not have the quiz for a book that a student has read, he/she may take the quiz at www.bookadventure.com and give a copy of the final score sheet to Mrs. Harper so the points can be adjusted and added to his/her cumulative score. Please do not take quizzes at www.bookadventure.com for titles that are in our quiz inventory.
When does Reading Counts Kick-Off?
All students should have their SRI tests completed by the end of September. Reading Counts will officially Kick-Off on Monday October 2, 2006! Any quizzes taken before this date, including those from Bookadventure.com, will not count toward a student's cumulative score for the school year 2006-2007!
When does Reading Counts end?
Reading Counts will be completed for the 2006-2007 school year in May 2007. This will give the PTA Reading Counts Committee time to close out all of the scores and determine the final awards. Please look for monthly ending dates in the Kibbles PTA newsletter.
Another important note:
If your child participated in Reading Counts at BES in previous school years, the Scholastic Reading Counts program will not allow him/her to retake any quizzes for which he/she has already received points! That is a great incentive to keep children reading new and more challenging books! |
